Ferrier Marchetti Studio implements design powered by thinking as a research and development strategy to transform ideas into actions and to develop innovative project solutions. Through a platform that brings together practitioners, researchers in the fields of architecture, city planners, designers, and humanities and social scientists, we aim to achieve a framework that is innovative and groundbreaking. Interaction and experience-sharing are key to this collaborative dynamic between inquiries and propositions, between diagnoses and solutions. We invent new design tools in order to share the architectural experience in pursuit of sustainable solutions that put human beings, their uses and their needs, at the heart of every single project.
Our approach relies on different kinds of actions that answer and feed each other:

• Articulate knowledge and know-how by bringing together a wide range of diverse fields around a transversal and collaborative methodology;

• Be and remain at the cutting edge of innovation thanks to a strong research and development division;

• Materialize our research outputs through an intended editorial production;

• Create innovative tools that enhance representation and experimentation of architecture (sensitive map, VR) for clients, elected officials, and citizens;

• Share and provide our expertise, thanks to frequent public interventions (installations, exhibitions, lectures, radio, and teaching).

Ferrier Marchetti Studio is a unique studio combining research and practice in a quest for innovation and urban delight.

Our process and design explore a new urban condition, finding and developing opportunities for cities to contribute positively to the planet’s eco balance and create a positive relationship between climate and design. Our architecture is not just about designing objects, but about the opportunities that design offers to create positive and meaningful relationships between buildings and people, contributing to a more holistic, sustainable and sensual world.

Themes and ideas that inform our work

Our approach is one which moves beyond the purely aesthetic consideration of objects to create meaningful relationships between people, spaces and places -buildings are catalysts for interaction, movement and lived life-. Architecture must create a new relationship to the world since our current relationships have become impoverished by hyper-abundance and accelerated obsolescence. The design of cities has to be informed not only by sustainable efficiency, but by a new and richer relationship with citizens. Technology has become the dominant driver of design. Our approach is to put people back in control and make technology serve a humanistic agenda.

Synergy with Climate

The pervasive technology of controlled environments has led to the creation of neutral, sanitised, self-enclosed spaces isolated from their context, and artificially managed in a way which has contributed significantly to global warming. When we banish the inconveniences of the natural environment we also ban its pleasures. Our architecture accepts and adapts to climate rather than denies it: we design buildings which expose or protect themselves as and when needed. We work with the ambient climatic conditions of light, temperature, noise and flow to let the environment in and create an experience that reflects and reconnects to nature.

Useful Aesthetics

We exercise a responsibility in terms of resources, focusing on frugality and lean design. Ferrier Marchetti Studio believes that there is no hierarchy of design and that value should be measured by impact and fitness for purpose, rather than its materials or any notion of luxury design. Like Charles and Ray Eames, we are driven by the program of our project and how this program can be served by the industrial, technological means at our disposal. As ‘techno-recruiters’, we act against impulsive novelty and addictive consumption, creating a specific purpose-driven language for each of our buildings. Our architecture seeks an intense material presence, using everyday resources, as they are or slightly transformed to better reveal their potential.

Senses and Pleasures

In reconsidering our urban infrastructure for a more sustainable future, we unlock an opportunity to place the human experience at the heart of all new projects. Ferrier Marchetti Studio designs from a humanistic perspective, with pleasure in mind, seeking to enhance the quality of life not just through individual buildings, but through the blurring of disciplinary barriers to create whole experiences. We aim to move beyond the fragmented, de-contextualised experience of cities to once again place the senses, the body at the centre of design. The pleasure that can be given by the daily experience of cities has to be reconquered as an essential and vital asset of our urban lives.

Details that Matter

Our work celebrates the micro as well as the macro, with a sensual focus on material, details and craftsmanship. We like to showcase materials in our buildings: their properties, densities, colours and textures. In this way, Ferrier Marchetti Studio considers all projects of equal value, drawing out the beauty in even the simplest project. We are fascinated by construction -even as children we began our relationship with the physical world by playing with cubes and piling them up, or constructing dens-. We all have a deeply felt and emotional relationship with the assembly of objects and spaces, and take a great satisfaction in seeing things that appear to be ‘right’ – well placed, contextual and revealing themselves in a way which resonates with us.

Built Landscapes

In an increasingly industrialised society, it is necessary to recreate links between city and nature, creating symbiotic spaces where the presence of nature can help revitalize the spirits of its citizens. When we allow nature to return to the city, we reconnect with those elements that geometric-led town planning has allowed us to forget and which are so central to our existence and well-being: the quality of water and air, the rhythm of the seasons, the natural day-night cycle. Our approach is not just about a few superficial areas of greenery, rather it is the integrated physical expression of ecosystems developing within the very heart of the city, nurturing a spontaneous regeneration of biodiversity. In our approach the city is more than simply a landscape combining nature and artefact, it is an inhabited environment, a living fabric within which various organisms create a harmonious balance.

Mobility and Balance

The city is in a constant state of ever-accelerating motion. As travel allows us to move faster over greater distances, with an attendant increase in the pace of urban life, speed renders our relationship to space abstract and impoverishes our daily experiences. In re-establishing our relationship to the city, we need to explore modes of travel which give us a fresh point of view and which permit a more dynamic perception of volumes and spaces. As we embrace slower, greener forms of transport, such as walking and cycling, our sense of urban space reawakens. Our means of transport shapes and modifies our perceptions and sharpens our senses. In exploring the idea of mobility with raised awareness we need to think more carefully about the aesthetic principles around movement, coherent visual sequences and clear readability of the landscape. Our approach to designing mobility infrastructure is one which seeks opportunities to create thriving public spaces.

Meaningful Context

Our design is both informed by and itself creates meaningful context. It is rooted in the reality of lived experience, so our projects are more likely to be relevant, efficient, purposeful and provide long term social/civic meaning. We take a non-formal, non-rigid approach to new projects, with a design process that is open to chance and opportunity. Our process is permeable, allowing aspects of an individual project, related to its location, climate and history to slip in and subtly modify our design response. We avoid being locked into an ‘obvious’ solution too soon, considering purpose, function and context harmoniously to arrive at not only the most efficient architectural solution, but also the most contextual.
